Learning About Fragrance Notes

Fragrance plays an important role in your home. It makes an impression on those who visit you.

Whether you prefer bakery scents or fresh clean scents in your home, fragrances help give your home a certain aura and presence. Fragrance notes are what creates this presence. Just like how a song is made up of different notes, fragrances combine different notes to create a unified and pleasing perfume. Our wax melts are expertly blended to bring you the best scents for your home. Our wax melts have a high fragrance load so they are stronger and last longer.

What are fragrance notes?

Notes are the ingredients that make up a fragrance. They are broken into three main categories: top notes, mid (heart) notes, and base notes. The selected blend of ingredients creates the character of a fragrance.

What are the top notes in a fragrance?

Top notes are the very first scents you smell, the first impression of a fragrance. They are usually fresh and light. Their job is to attract and smoothly transition into the mid notes. Typical top notes include: lavender, bergamot, citrus, ginger, sage, and other light fruits.

What are the middle (heart) notes in a fragrance?

Middle notes are generally pleasant and balancing. Middle notes make up the foundation of a fragrance and can make up about 40-80% of the scent. They are made to show up after the initial rush of the top notes drift away. They are made to last longer so they are made with more potent scents. Typical middle notes are: lemongrass, geranium, ylang ylang, rose, jasmine, and coriander.

What are the base notes in a fragrance?

The base notes are meant to work together with the middle notes. They work together to deepen the scent of a fragrance. They are the final notes and linger longer while the top and middle notes evaporate. They are usually very rich and smooth. Typical base notes are: cedarwood, vanilla, amber, oak, patchouli, and musk.

How to Clean Wax From Just About Anything

With a little knowledge and elbow grease, you can remove wax from just about anything.

It’s inevitable. You are throwing a party and someone knocks over your wax warmer and there is wax all over the carpet, wall and end table. There is no easy way to clean up melted wax from things, but with a little work and knowledge, you’ll be able to remove wax from just about anything.

From Fabric:

First, put the fabric in the freezer for about thirty minutes (If the wax is on a couch or something that can not be put in the freezer, then use an ice cube to freeze the wax). Then, remove the fabric and scrape off the cold wax. Next, use a warm iron and place a paper bag over the remaining wax. Run the iron over the wax and the paper bag will absorb it. Finish it off by applying a little straight laundry detergent directly to the stain and washing as directed. If the wax leaves a particularly noticeable stain, you can also treat it with stain-remover if the fabric is washable.

From Painted Walls:

Using a similar method to the fabric, warm an iron to its low setting and place several layers of paper towels over the wax. Working in short intervals, run the iron over the paper towels. The wax should transfer to the paper towels. If you are scared to use the iron, try a hairdryer on the hottest setting. Wipe off the wax as it melts.

From Wood:

Don’t try to chip away at the wax when it’s spilled on wood. This could remove the finish of the wood. Instead, use a hairdryer on the warm setting and slowly melt the wax, wiping it away as it melts.

From Carpet:

Place a paper bag over the wax and turn your iron on to a low setting. Run your iron over the bag where the wax is. The wax will soften and the bag will absorb it.

From Sink/Countertop:

Use a dish scraper or credit card to scrape up the wax and discard it in the garbage. Use very hot water to dissolve the rest of the wax then clean with a brush and dish soap.

From Hair:

If the wax is closer to the ends of the hair, hold it under running hot tap water. If it’s closer to the root, use olive oil to help loosen it up and then pull the wax out.

Hard surfaces like TV, candleholders, etc.

Use an ice cube to freeze the wax then slowly work at chipping the wax off.

How to Get the Best Fragrance Throw

If you’ve spent any time in a Facebook wax group, you know that throw is the most important component when determining a candle’s quality. Throw is the term used to describe how well the scent from a candle circulates throughout a space. A lot of people think that you just need to find a candle with a good scent, but that won’t do you any good if the fragrance won’t fill a room. Considering the following items when choosing a candle will help ensure that you find one with a robust throw.

A lot of people think that you just need to find a candle with a good scent, but that won’t do you any good if the fragrance won’t fill a room.

Use High Quality Wax

Scented candle wax is made when wax is combined with fragrance oils. If the fragrance oil is added at the right time and temperature, it will bind to the wax. When the wax is heated, the oil is released along with the fragrance.

Generally speaking, paraffin wax will have a better throw than soy wax. Paraffin wax binds better to the oil, so more fragrance is released when it’s warm. Soy candles sometimes smell stronger when cold, but their hot throw is not as wide.

There is some concern about possible pollutants associated with burning a paraffin wax candle. Using a candle warmer to heat paraffin wax, rather than burning it, allows you to enjoy the fragrance without the risks of flame, soot, or other pollutants.

Managing Expectations:

Candle wax will have a different intensity of fragrance when it’s cold compared to when it’s hot. Depending on the type of wax being used, it may smell stronger when it’s cold or hot. The fragrance might also be much different when the wax is heated than it was when it was cold. Getting to know different fragrances and brands will help you to know what to expect from a candle or wax melts, and to decide which your favorites are.

A Wide Wax Pool

Only the wax that is warmed will be releasing fragrance, so getting a bigger wax pool going will give you the widest throw. When burning a candle, those that are bigger, and have more than one wick, will throw better than smaller, one-wick candles. Candle warmer crocks will heat a candle from all sides, turning the entire jar into a giant wax pool, and releasing maximum fragrance. The only problem with this method is that it shortens the life of the candle.

Candle Warmer Lamps and Lanterns from Candle Warmers Etc. use top-down warming technology to create a wide wax pool, while still preserving the layers of wax beneath for future use. This method gives you the best of both worlds: maximum fragrance throw, and longer lasting candles.

Fan Fragrance

A good solution for spreading fragrance throughout a larger space is to use a Fan Fragrance Warmer from Candle Warmers Etc. These warmers are equipped with a whisper-quiet fan that circulates the fragrance. Wax melts in any fragrance can be added to their tins, and the fragrance will spread within minutes.
